Usualy people change the whole set of strings, so I just thought he changed to higher gauge for tonal purpose.
And yeah, setting up your guitar each time you change the strings is very painful, you should try different gauges first to see which is better for you (for comfortable playing and tonal reasons) , and stick with it forever ..
