[p]Anders is only using the pentatonic scale as a visual reference. But he's actually using the full diatonic scale because you need all 7 notes in order to play a series of 3rds intervals. The pentatonic scale skips notes, so it's not possible to use the 3rds concept consistently.

With a diatonic scale you can consistently skips 3rds:

1-3

2-4

3-5

4-6

5-7

6-1

7-2

1-3

But with minor pentatonic you are missing scale degrees 2 & 6! Or with major pentatonic you are missing scale degrees 4 & 7. So you are stuck with:

minor pentatonic

1-3

3-5

4-7

5-?

7-?

So you could fill in the blanks there with other notes, but it's not going to be 3rds because those notes are missing from pentatonic. Make sense?

You could do this:

minor pentatonic

1-3

3-5

4-7

5-1

7-3

It sounds like what you really need is to be able to better visualize the scale degrees on the fretboard so you can play whatever patterns you want.
