Hey spcharles24,

Most melodies (in general!) will use notes from a set scale, as you said.

The trick is that it's selective. Sometimes melodies move Step-Wise (C-D-E-F-G) and sometimes they move with Leaps (C-E-G). If the note goes UP, you don't always know exactly how many notes it's skipping upwards. You'll get better at this with more experience.

But YES, using a basic scale (for example Major or Minor) is a GREAT way to help predict where a melody is going to land under your fingers. I do use this all the time when learning a melody.
