Tony Iommy from Black Sabbath famously cut the tips of his chord hand while working on a lathe. He overcame this potentially career-ending injury by creating his own plastic fingertips by melting down washing-up liquid bottles and moulding them to fit his fingers while still warm.

You could look to using a re-purposed thimble or something similar. The only difficulty you'll have, I think, is the lack of 'feel', but if Tony can build a multi-million selling career stretching six decades, I'm sure a bit of perserverence will pay dividends.
