Number one, you need to be able to paly smoothe
Number two, you need to be able to play accruately
Number three, you must combine the two with finger and picking speed.

esentially all this amounts to is building coordination.

Number four, learn to play using differnt muting techniques.

Example 1. Using the tip of your finger to mute the string above the one you are currently playing while resting your hand a bit to allow the finger you are using to play to mute the strings below it.

Example 2. Use your picking hand to help mute unwanted strings while playing or hover your hand above the pickups low enough to help deaden unwanted feedback.

Example 3. While playing slower use your index finger on your fretting hand to baically mute the strings above the frets you want to play on by barring the strings.

Number 5, you should probably practice a lot working up your fluidity and clarity with charomatic exercises, but more importantly playing things slow, buildign accruacy and then speeding them up.

Always remember to practice anything you want to learn how to play slowly then work it up to speed. Makes it clearer but over all it will make your skills as a gutiarist more powerful.
