The main system that I know is the twelve-tone row: you write down all twelve notes of the octave and cross off each one once you've used it. You can choose to do it harmonically or melodically --however you want it. And you can always use reverse and inverse of your row, or cut it in half, flip the halves around and do reverse and inverse as you like and keep doing that over and over again.[br][br]The other way I know is to pick an interval and only use it and its inversion plus the octave to write something, say like the minor 3rd and the major 6th, plus the octave; or P4th and 5ths.[br][br]But, you also might wish to consider scales beyond 7 notes. I thought it might be an interesting idea to use Locrian + the major chord in the tonic: thus I found the magical scale of Styptygic.[br]Check out ianring.com for more scales like these.
