I have been going through the same for several months now. I have a fairly good knowledge of where I should be on the fret board for any given key, but once it comes down to making something that doesn't sound like scale practice - that is a challenge - but it is getting better.

What I do, is to keep a note pad beside me and jot down what I did - if I think it sounded like "music" and not practice.

I also try to learn licks - all kind of licks - and play around with these.
