Good luck!
I, like yourself, have been an aspiring guitar player since I was 17. That was a long time ago. And like you, I really enjoy playing with other people. Fortutunately, for me, I have people I can jam with that understand that I am a "tag along player". What this means is that I will jump in when I feel I can.
Understanding some basic theory and knowing how to use it is important.
I think if you can find these type of players, you will find people you can hang with and be part of the jam - regardless of the level of contribution!
again, good luck and stick with it.
Edit: tuning by ear - good for you if you can, but at my stage in life, time is short. I don't waste time - its electronic for me.
This year the diet is definitely gonna stick!
