I am inclined to think that is great advice. If something is enjoyable, you will almost certainly put in the time and get better, maybe without even realizing it. Also, as you move on, you will still be practicing the stuff that came before, just because it's part of playing guitar. So as you move on to new lessons, when doing as a matter of course things that were in previous lessons, continue to be thinking about what you are doing and do it conscientiously - think about whether you are doing it correctly and effectively. You will probably move past the bar chord lesson long before you have mastered bar chords for example. Always try to improve on the basics and make them something you can do well without really thinking about it. I don't know if this will work well or not but I just made some index chords with each one indicating something I want to practice (e.g., bar chords, or C chord embellishments, or interval recognition training). I plan to draw at least one at random each day before I begin doing whatever it is I am currently working on.

A good rule of thumb is to continue to have fun! I know that's cheesy but it's true. Learning guitar is about playing music and having fun. You do not want to make it feel like work.

Basically, only you know when to move on, and it's probably sooner than you think!
