I've been playing guitar for about a year now and I've made a lot of progress. I need practice to play anything though. If I want to play a tune by ear I often make mistakes even with the easiest of sounds. I can move around scales and with the scales I am familiar with I know what I am going to play generally before I play it. I am wondering if being able to just play a melody you have not practiced before (simple or not) is something one can do after lots of playing? Do you need to do lots of practice of scales for it? Are there any exercises one needs to do to achieve it?
