Well, I've never heard any recordings that sounded good coming from a setup like that.

If you want to have control over each instrument seperately, you'll want to use multi-track recording. Like I said in my previous post, the cheapest options are either an analog 4-track(fostex or tascam), or a multi-track computer program like Cakewalk(guitartracks), N-track, pro-tools free, cubase, logic,....
If you have a decent computer, I'd try the software thing.
