This tutorial covers the concept of the pentatonic scales (major & minor) & demonstrates all 5 interlocking shapes that cover the fretboard.

These tutorials are exercises that use each shape to play over backing tracks.

Have fun with them!

I remember one of the most revelatory things someone told me in the 80's when I was just starting to get the hang of scales and stuff was that 'the pentatonic scale is all over the fretboard'. It was an over simplification but I remember he went on to say that an A note in one postions is just as in key as an A note in another position.

It dawned on me that the scales weren't just 'boxes' but configurations of notes that work. I'd been learning all the modes (Lydian, Mixolydian and so on) but I really had no idea what to do with the shapes. I knew they were 'in key' in some way or another but what that meant? Well, I had no clue. That very simple 'pentatonic all over the fretboard' really capped it. Even though it did not exactly explain how to use modes (and really, having ignored rules for so long, what do I really know now?), it did help open up how I thought of notes across the fretboard.

These groups of notes weren't 'rules' per se but a map of the fretboard that allows me to decide how and where I travel.

...I still have much to learn but......but I jumped orders of magnitude after that little convo.
