Check out www.paia.com - these guys produce various effects kits that you can build and save some money. You can also learn about the effects and try changing component values (don't try drastic changes, always small changes) to see what differences you can hear. Check out Craig Anderton's book, "Electronic Projects for Musicians". This has a number of effects pedals that you can build yourself. The book is available at the Paia site or you can find it in many music stores.
