The portastudio is legendary. I had a cassette 4 track portastudio until I was able to do this stuff on my computer.

I have 2 Tascam digital recorders...a DR-70 and DR-05. I've had the DR-05 for 8 years or so...I got it when it first came out, and it's great. The DR-70 is technically for recording audio along with video on a DSLR camera. I use it to record 4 tracks out of my mixer when I'm playing out.

Overall I'm happy with Tascam products. The DR-70 was rough in the beginning because it is very particular about the memory card you use with it, other than that it's awesome.

I suspect any portastudio you choose will work well for you.
