G&R might have been vaguely interesting when they first came out, but by now, to be brutally honest, they're a bunch of sad old hacks. Seeing them limp around a stage is going to be like watching your dad dance.
This whole pre-occupation with nu-metal is pathetic. Considering the vast differences between the bands to whom the label is applied (Korn - certainly not "nu" anything, Limp Biskit - hip hop with guitars, Linkin Park - boy band with guitars, Incubus - RHCP copyists, SOAD - a genre unto themselves, Slipknot - the sound of a metal can being beaten with a wooden spoon), it's pointless to even try to discuss them as a genre.
Does anyone seriously think that Korn and Incubus sound even remotely alike?
Hair metal is dead, and good riddance too. Grunge had its day and faded. Who cares? Rather than waste so much effort whinging about what's on MTV or the corporate radio stations, why not get off your arses and find some new music that you do like? I can't help but feel that that's a much more positive approach than posting endless whinge-fests on internet message boards about how you don't like what other people are playing.
There is plenty of good new music out there. While I wouldn't necessarily expect anyone else to have the same taste as me, recent stuff I've been impressed with includes The Cooper Temple Clause, Wilt, Dark Star, some GYBE and more. For some reason I find it much more satisfying to seek out new music that I might like than to sit here reminiscing about good music of the past. Sure, I miss the Jesus and Mary Chain, and Levitation, and Slowdive, and The God Machine and countless other bands that have passed on, but at least I recognise that they're not coming back.
Why not go to your local record shop, pick 5 CDs at random and ask to listen to them on headphones? Then pick 5 more. Keep going. There'll be something in there you like, unless what you really enjoy is the whinging.
