Yes, you defintely can start on electric guitar. No reason not too unless you wanted to start on acoustic. I started on electric. The only 'hazard' is that when you start out, you probbly aren't as good sounding as you would like and well, it amplifies your imperfections and makes them noisy and distorted.
But that's the way it's supposed to be!
We all played like crap when we started. Just that I remember oh so many years ago, some kids starting out got discouraged because they didn't think they sounded so good. You're a beginner and you won't sound good. None of us did. The only other suggustion is to practice 'acoustically'. Which is to say, play an amp on the clean channel or not plugged in at all.
When I practiced stuff, I did not plug in because I wanted to know if I was getting it right. Once I felt like I was comfortable, I would plug in and wail away.

Though others have suggested a Fender/Squier/Affinity guitar, I would suggest given your musical tastes you may be better suited getting a lower cost Ibanez or Dean guitar. Both are well made and more suited to metal. Not that the Fender/Squier/Affinity isn't a good deal and good way to start, but for your tastes, these other brands may meet your tastes a little better.
Below is a video from a guy named Philip McKnight (good video series too) where Philip, who himself owns his own music store, takes on the challenge of going to a Sam Ash to buy a guitar and amp for under $500. What to watch for is not what he ends up buying but the different styles of guitars/amps he looks at or tries while doing it. Pretty instructive.

If you have a friend that already plays, bring him/her to help with trying them out. In the end, when you spend on a lower cost instrument, the quality control isn't as controled as it should be. You can get great guitar for a low price but just make sure that it plays well. I would not recommend buying over the internet unless that is your only choice.
[QUOTE=caseyskillen]3 - is this site good for anyone who has no experience whatsoever and is starting from the bottom up?
YES!
I have been playing since 1982 and there is much for advanced players here but, this site is awesome for beginners. The Guitar Fundementals 1 and 2 are very, very useful. It tells you things I wished I had known when I started. I was self-taught and when you do that, you miss some of those fundementals that you end up having to learn later.
Soooo....good luck on your journey with guitar. Remember that the guitar will always challenge you and always leaving you wanting to be better than you are now and alway teach that no matter how good you are, there's is something new to learn. If you see guitar playing as an adventure, you will always enjoy it, even when you are faced with a new, hard thing to learn.
