Hey Casey.. Welcome to GuitarTricks
You can use either type of guitar..
Fender are good in my mind because they are relatively easy to set up..
Any guitar you should try before you buy.. Make sure to have a sset up. A poor set up will have you frustrated. If you have absolutely no experience have a friend go with you to try..
Fender squier strats are ok but you may need to try a lot to get a good one.. The same wtth Ibanez Geo.. Fender "Made in Mexico" are of good quality for the price. Epiphone are also quality copies of Gibson.
There a lots of modeling amp in the brand names. I thnk you should make sure you can set up to a good clean tone. Also that it has a headphone jack for times you may want to practice quietly..
