As normally formed, I just can't seem to get good tone. In the past I'd compensate for this by stretching my ring finger all the way to the 6th string, 3rd fret, and tucking the pinky finger next to it on the 5th string. I find this still works for me, but I'm wondering if there is anything down the road that will make me regret not doing the C chord in the conventional manner? Except for a dozen or so lessons with a guitarist a few years back, I've been self taught, but I'd like to become truly proficient now and don't want to make a mistake at this point. I suspect my dreadnought-size guitar (that I've had for years) might be a little too big, but this is the only problem I've encountered.

I would try this shape:

E|-----
B|--3--
G|--0--
D|--x--
A|--3--
E|-----

Middle finger on the root C, then your ring finger on the D interval.

I'd also advise at least getting comfortable with the traditional position.

E|-----
B|--1--
G|--0--
D|--2--
A|--3--
E|-----

For that shape, ring finger takes the root, middle finger curls underneath to grab the major 3rd on the second fret and your pointer finger grabs the last C note on the first fret.

Hope this helps!
