He had been battling with cancer for over a year. You can read his online cancer journal on http://www.zenguitar.com
He was a great guy. I'm actually translating his book in french, and I have created a zen guitar screensaver for everyone to download (it's on his site)

I was working with him on the 'one song one sound' guitar method, but we didn't have time to finish it...

Interesting concept, Zen guitar......reminds me of Vai's excercise where you pick one note only for an hour and make yourself concentrate only on that sound and not let the mind wander. Its a pretty nauseating excercise, I felt drained dry by the time i finished.......and it drove my neighbours nuts hearing the same sound over and over and over.....

The mental side of guitar playing provided a whole new approach for me. I used to study theatre and got into Stanislavski's concepts of emotional memory and impulse channelling and so on....thats all for acting but it goes well with music too.

Although I still get lots of ideas just by picking up the guitar and 'meandering'
'There's no such thing as bad weather, there's only the wrong clothes...'

Actually, lots of Vai's weird talk is pretty much well explained in Zen Guitar. Not in a way 'Vai said so, here's what he meant' but without mentioning him, just coming from the zen masters.

:)
That's fun
I worked for McDonalds one month, 5 days/week, 8 hrs/day
Guess how much did they pay me?
60 bucks

this must have been in the 1970's then, because 40 hours a week x 4 = 160 hours, and if you only got 60 bucks, you got like $2.70 and hour.

dude.... not to sound a little annoying....

2.70 per hour would still pay more than 60 bucks a week..

40 hours at 2.70 would be 108 bucks.... times 4 for a month would be 432 dollars

I couldnt help myself being pedantic ;)
guns dont kill people, people kill people, and monkeys do too (if they've got a gun)
