Hey everyone. I'm 58 years old, retired and have played guitar (acoustic mostly) off and on since 3rd grade. Probably 10 years total if you add the "spurts" together. Some spurts have been 6 months. Some 2-3 years. I started playing again a couple of months ago. At the moment I'm playing alone in my house. The internet offers infinite information these days. Anyway, I joined for free lessons to see if I like it. If I think I can benefit from the paid lessons I'll join that. I love rock and have always wanted to play it. But, whenever I play guitar I lean toward mellower stuff I can play and/or sing when alone. I've played some fingerstyle. Meaning I learned a couple of different patterns then used them and changed them a little depending on the song. But I seldom learn a song note for note as a recorded version. I can't play by ear very well at all. I could always hear and sing anything within my vocal range fine. But finding chords on a guitar are so freaking hard most musicians don't understand it. I can learn a 1-4-5 chord progression song. Anything more complicated, especially with diminished, 7ths, etc. is beyond my ear. I've been hearing about "ear training" these days. I can read music a little and I can figure out chords using the major scales and a chart of which notes in a scale are needed for different chord types. 7ths, dim. etc. Anyway, hello. My biggest hopes is to get direction for improving my guitar playing. I used to sing but right now my voice (10 year break) sounds like multiple cats fighting. I'm not just off key, I squeek, squawk and make never before heard sounds I think. It's getting a little better but right now my singing is HORRIBLE.
