Welcome to the best guitar player's forum on the web!
I haven't built my own axe yet, but I was studying up on it when I found an old Odyssey V in a pawn shop. Its pretty much what I was going to build anyway, so I dropped the project.
What makes the Odyssey so much better than the Gibson, Epiphone, or Washburn versions, is the neck-through-body construction. This baby is solid maple! The controls are mounted in a cavity routed out of the back of the lower 'wing' with just the knobs showing on the front of the guitar. No pick-plate to hide that lovely wood.
I recommend a book by Melvyn Hiscock, called Make Your Own Electric Guitar. While you're on the StewMac site checking out that book, take a look around the rest of the site. StewMac is a veritable gold mine of hard-to-find parts, tools, and information.
Good luck. Keep us posted on your progress.
