The numbers I call out are the scale degrees of the diatonic major scale. I know where they are because I know the sound of the scale & the fretboard pattern they make.

In order to understand how I use those to get to the pentatonic boxes you should work through these tutorials that cover the major & minor scale in depth.

Also, once you grasp how the major & minor scales have interval formulas that determine the fretboard patterns they make you can make better use of the fretboard graphics on the bottom of the lesson pages!
