There's stretching fingers for 'health', i.e., stretching exercises to keep the hand and fingers flexible and limber. Warm-up exercises in other words. Christopher has a tutorial here, http://www.guitartricks.com/lesson.php?input=19585 With these and others on the web be sure to listen closely...don't over-do, don't injure yourself. I personally believe that overall conditioning is a good life style...everything should be exercised for strength and endurance (and balance) and warm ups are a part of that. Still, all physical activity is exercise specific. If you want to be a runner, practice running. If you want to be a strong backpacker, hike with a pack. If you want to be a guitarist, practice and play.

Then there's exercises intended to improve stretch, i.e., reach. A long strong reach is important when working on chords/awkward patterns of fingering. My absolute favorite is this from Justin Guitar, http://www.justinguitar.com/en/TE-101-FingerStretchExercise.php This will increase your reach over time. Again, the important thing here is to listen to Justin's instructions...start off slow...slow enough to make each note ring clear and true while maintaining proper positioning of the hand and fingers. Of course, stretching six frets from the first position probably ain't gonna happen at the beginning. I still can't quite make that distance but then, I remember when a four-fret stretch was difficult. :)

EDIT: Ooops! I pushed the send button and then saw Christopher snuck in on me. :D
"It takes a lot of devotion and work, or maybe I should say play, because if you love it, that's what it amounts to. I haven't found any shortcuts, and I've been looking for a long time."
