The Snark is a great tuner. The Fattest string and the narrowest strings are both E strings. The order of strings from the fattest to narrowest are EADGBE

The fattest closest to your chest is a low E. The Snark knows by vibration which note you are trying to play, now that you know the note names you can tune.

Left of the center line on the Snark is FLAT or low of the note and the string needs to be tightened. Right of the center mark is SHARP or over the note and the string should be loosened.

All notes that you will play are A through G, so the notes moving up from the fat low E will be F and G and then that open string A the second fatest string.
