The trick is to mute with both hands.

Mute any and all unwanted string sound & noise with your picking hand palm all the time. Start making a habit of constantly resting your picking hand palm on the strings. The only time to not mute is to let strings ring.

With your fretting hand you need to mute any adjacent strings. But most importantly with bends, hammer-ons, pull-offs, etc. (all physical technique mechanics) do not remove your fingers & hands from the strings.

You want to press down to make the note sound. But when you are done with the note, just release enough pressure to get the string from stop sounding. But lightly maintain contact with the string. Don't just let go of the string!

Make sense? :)

Hope this helps. Ask more if necessary. Have fun!
