I agree with you about getting on to learning songs as soon as possible. I did that ( only been playing since early May, also following along with Chris), and am again hyper motivated to get back to the theory parts.
I'm actually thinking of making learning songs my primary objective for a little while. It's a fun way to learn and use new chords.
After two weeks away from GT because of study obligations, I dropped in again today and tried out 'Achy Breaky Heart' that I learned a bit a couple of weeks ago, and suddenly I could play along with it almost on time! This got me so motivated that I am now adding "Every Rose has its Thorn" to my list of songs ot learn next. The chord combinations are just a tiny bit challenging, so that means I'll have to spend a little while smoothing them out.
Definitely, intersperse your learning of the Fundamentals with learning songs, because that is ultimately what it is all about. Having fun playing songs.
