It doesn't really do anything to increase your status on the board. What increases your status and reputation is the way you conduct yourself here- that is, the amount but moreso the quality of your posts.
All the mods I know have been here a long time. Each has had many months and many many posts before being a moderator was considered, because I think one aspect of being a moderator is being a leader; that is, leading discussions in constructive ways and steering them away from negative ones. That's why the six months period is in place, so you have a chance to firmly establish yourself.
You may well be a good choice man, but I think the six-month wait is a good idea.
