Eddie Van Halen was one of the first guys I recall who stressed this issue. In 1977 when Van Halen opened for Ted Nugent, Ted got to the Arena Early one day and decided to do his soundcheck using Eddie's gear, The famous "striped" strat and the variac-modified marshall, and Guess what, as Eddie put it , "It sounded like Ted".
In 1994, Steve Vai had a show in New Haven CT. but his equipment had not arrived from Europe yet, so he was forced to play through a Marshall Stack, Straight, with no rack gear whatsoever , and guess what. It sounded like Vai.
