Nope, Vai doesn't use the Metal Zone, I'm pretty sure. He does however use the DS-1 or something, the orange one. I'm not quite sure if the DS-1 is the exact model he uses, but http://www.vai.com could answer that question for you.

Now, for getting a Vai-like tone, this pedal wont do the trick I think. A lot of people use pedals like this just to overdrive the tubes in their amp just a bit more, and I'm sure Vai doesn't use it constantly.
So, the pedal is just a little part of a much bigger picture.
