I listen to a variety of music but my mainstay is punk. So I learned alot (all) of the power chords when I started playing. Cyberfret.com has a great guitar site for beginners. Also check out Grimoire's Guitar Book. It has really good instructions on scales, chord construction and progressions. They have many other books in the Grimoire series but this one is a collaboration of the important parts taken from them. I was also told that Fretboard Logic has great books to learn from.
