Whan I started buying amps, I focused on tube amps around the 50 watt range (cause I was gonna be such a big star! lol). Now, I have a small pile of them unused in the basement, while I generally use a 15 watt Traynor instead. Tube amps have a better sound to my ear, and tube amps need to be pushed a bit to sound good. Thus, a smaller amp will give you those singing and sustaining Santana tones at a volume most neighbours can handle. :)
If I was doing this again, I'd start with a 15 watt amp, like a Blues Junior, or Night Train, etc. Egnator makes one in this range as well. 15 watts puh-lenty of amp. I would combine that with a multi FX pedal if you are into effects, like a Digitech RP255, etc.
Spend up if you have the dough, but that would get you everything you'd need for great tone and plenty of volume.
...so ever since then, I always hang on to the buckle.
