i also got a bit confusd when i first read over it in my haste to get playing, but when i read over it again, it was really simple. Its just like the belgian beer lover said( :) ). But there is also the grid way. Heres an extract from the thing i downloaded to learn TAB.

Reading grids is about the same. The 6 lines represent the strings of the guitar.
The double line on the left is the nut. The numbers on the lines are the finger numbers and the single lines represent frets.(The 0 on the D string means let that string ring out with the chord.)
This is a grid representation of an open D chord.

E||-----|--2--|-----|----||
B||-----|-----|--3--|----||
G||-----|--1--|-----|----||
D0|-----|-----|-----|----||
A||-----|-----|-----|----||
E||-----|-----|-----|----||

thats the extract, and basically the double line at the right hand end means its closed and they all get played together not after eachother. At least thats how i
understood it. :)
Who would call their kid Bruce anyway???
