i think i already mentioned this, but it´s very helpful if you jam with someone else over your riffs, for then it will pretty sure lead to another riff and then to another riff etc.
Thatz the way i work with my band, and it works pretty well. If someone has a new riff and doesnt know where to fit it in or how to find a good next part, then we sit together (my second guitarist and i) and we jam over that thingy - and most of the time one of us has an idea how to continue. Sometimes we even change the riff, etc.
And if that doesnt help, we put the riff away for a few weeks and try it again later.
