If you are ever planning to get good at playing guitar (anything more then playing a couple of chords by a campfire) you should really consider starting on a CLASSIC guitar. Even if you decide to later play on electric guitar you should acquire the basic skills on classic guitar.
I play an electric guitar for over 10 years but I still practice A LOT on classic guitar (I never play it in public/on gigs though).
If you just want to learn a couple of chords then go ahead, buy a cheap acoustic guitar, learn chords in 2 weeks and thats it. But I don't see how you would benefit from starting on an acoustic guitar for anything beyond that.
