I got a Big Baby Taylor BBT for 400$, which is a fantastic guitar... sounds better than a 1000$ guitar. Or, for that price you might go for a Cort acoustic guitar, which are just perfect as well.
In any case I suggest you to go to the store and try as many as you can, you'll find out which one is the right guitar for you.
