For the lead solo the guys wanted something completely different, so I went to this:

C#m / A / E

And now I'm trying to figure out how to get from E back to G, right now I climb like this:

C#m / A / E / B / C / D / G

My question is, are there any other ways I could climb from E to G to lead into the chorus again?

Since your target is G major try the V chord of G major, a D7 chord. Add in an A7 to help point to the D7, then the 7th chords will really help lead the chord voices toward the G.

If the lead (bridge section) is normally this:

C#m / A / E

Then, try this:
C#m / A / E
C#m / A / E
C#m / A / E
C#m / A7 / D7

Or you could add a secondary dominant for variety:
C#m / A / E
C#m / A7 / G#7 (V7 of C#m)
C#m / A / E
C#m / A7 / D7

Best of success with it!
