You just need to find the sweet spot for you. And it might be difficult, based on my own experience. I've got a few different bridge styles on guitars and I find they [u]critically[/u] affect how easily I can mute.

For me, a TOM style is perfect, and I find Strats more difficult. I have a Schaller FR, which is a fairly high unit, so I don't find it too bad. The trick is only to keep from moving the string tension when muting.
...so ever since then, I always hang on to the buckle.
