These guys have already answered part of your question, use the one that feels the best for ya. The other part, which type of pick do the pros use depend on the style of music they play. In my knowledge, basically hard rock to metal, and some blues, they (almost) always use either heavy of extra heavy gauges. I even read in guitar player that Yngwie uses only Fender's Extra Heavy to play his guitar...
I believe in the philosophy of going with the experience, therefore if these guys use the heavy gauges to play, I'll use them also...
