I think his type of voice fits in well with their music. He's got a little dirt in his growl that no one else can do as well. If you listen to Kill 'Em All or Ride The Lightning, though, it's pretty high pitched. There was a big change with ...And Justice For All.

Hetfield has a heavy sounding, take no prisoners, "badass" voice. GO listen to Blackened, And Justice For All, The thing that Should not Be, and Harvester of Sorrow. You'll see what I'm talking about, his voice fits the music perfectly.
Also, I'm surprised at how many other AIC fans are here.

Ella Fitzgerald
She's my favorite. Her voice is so goddamn smooth and legato like nobody I've ever heard. She had great range too, hit those low notes great. Also, I dont like saying best, but I think she is undisputably the best scatter ever. She could go for minutes on end and it was like listening to an expert saxophone player, I could go forever.
Carmen Mcray
I've only heard some of her stuff, but she's good at scatting, and she's also got an incredible sense of rythym. She was great at throwing in hemiolas and syncopation to her singing as well.
Stevie Wonder (had to pick somebody still alive)
Not too much to say specifically, he's just really good. Great tone, great vibrato.

Hey atomic, I totally see where you're coming from. The whole drill sergeant/dog bark style vocal Hetfield has going just seems so, sooo cheesy to me. I mean its so faux doomy look at us we are tough.
I much prefer when he actually sings, the whole growl thing just sounds abrasive to me.

I normally don't like vocalists(not the people themselves, just singing), but the one vocalist no one has mentioned,
and is IMO the best singer ever, male or female, is:

Freddie Mercury of Queen.

my favorites are:
Robert Plant
Ian Gillan
Freddy Mercury
Bon Scott
Brian Johnson
Glenn Hughes
David Coverdale

Almost all of them have a great range...
especialy gillan, which in my opinion was the greatest vocalist of his era...
Just listen to made in japan - child in time, and strange kind of woman - He's doing just great vocals there...
Freddy - not much to say... great range, tough he didnt sound to good on concerts...
all the others are just great vocalists... nothing much else to say...

but i know better.
It is not I who am crazy.
It is I who am mad.."

Man - I was gettin' worried for a minute then...a whole page and no mention of Freddy!...

There's plenty more, but these come to mind in no paticular order

Freddy Mercury, (Queen)
Micheal Stipe (Snipe, Stnipe....) (REM)
James Hetfield (Dummmm....)
Elton John
ummmm....others....can't remember....that'll have to do...

Don't worry too much about me, ignore me long enough and I'll go away.

I dont want to seem like a "metal head" or nothing but I think Till Lindenmann (i think i spelled it right) from Rammstein. He's the first metal type rock band singer that actually SINGS! (i dont mean like metallica or nothing, bands like that do sing) i mean like compaired to static-x, korn, and other bands, it sounds much better, and it actually works! later!

hey - i just picked up the pink floyd double cd live album, "pulse". all the vocals are done by david gilmour. i think that he actually has a better voice than roger waters!

of course, it is up to debate as to who's voice sounds better. and, i must admit, some songs (like hey you, or another brick in the wall) just need waters' voice to sound right.
... and that's all I have to say about that.
