there is no such thing as the "best guitarist in the world" but my favorite guitarist and one who I think has done a great job of creating a distinctive tone and style is Trey Anastasio from Phish....now don't go all crazy on me people....it's just my opinion and for some reason people who like Trey sure seem to get a lot of crap...but if you look at some of Phish's worked out songs...forget the jams for now...look at creations like You Enjoy Myself...Divided Sky...Reba....Stash..etc....if you really do understand music you have to admit those are pretty creative and interesting compositions...and those Sample in a Jar solo's.....legato bends galore....love em

and that tone of his (late 90's is the best) is just so creamy smoothe....I love it!!!

Even though there is, of course, no best guitarist in the world. For me there are some prime examples of playing.

In terms of feel: Slash, incedible how he can bring emotions to his guitar.
In terms of technical style I wish to achieve: Marty Friedman, such an inspiring man!
In terms of total awesome fast rythm: James Hetfield, fastest downpicker in the world. If you don't know what I'm talking about here, just search for Fight Fire With Fire live in Mexico from 2009.

I think Satch is probably the most versatile guitar player of all time. Theres really nothing he can't do well.

Well that's a hard question! My top two are Glenn Tipton and Brian May. They influenced me more than anyone else.

What about.........Robin trower
frank marino
johnny winter
pat travers
pat metheny
tony Iommi
john mclaughlin..there are so many it really comes down to favorites, not best.... by the way all the above have been recording since the late 1960s, early seventies, and continue to do so, successfuly. Hendrix and SRV were flashes in the Pan, although very bright ones!

I'd choose Allan Holdsworth and resort to cannibalism within the first hour...

This is a very subjective topic....but how about Warren Haynes....

Warren is now listed @ #23 of "Top 100 all time best guitar players" by Rolling Stone. Certainly one of my favorites! :)

For anyone unfamiliar with him, Warren plays/sings for Allman Brothers, Greatful Dead, his own band Govt Mule and has just launched a solo album. If you've never heard Warren, give him a listen!

Peace

Is everyone forgetting the other died young incredible guitarist, Duane Allman? Live at Filmore -some say the greatest live album ever?
Truth be told I could name 20+ guitarist that I love listening to.
In an interview a reporter asked Hendrix what does it feel like to be the greatest guitarist in the world? His answer? Ask Phil Keaggy.

Thanks for the links to players I don't know much about.

Hi all..... first post so here goes....

Frank Zappa

But as others have said its far to tricky to say who is/was the "best" but I love to see peoples opinions and look up people I have not herd of before.

Some others that are less known (possibly)

Hugh Cornwal (Stranglers)
Capitan Sensible (The Damned)

Im showing my age now lol!!

Im a big fan of Dean Weens work with Ween as well, some of the country inspired stuff is well worth a listen.

I once saw a poll in a guitar mag about 15 years ago...the readers voted Brain may as the most under rated guitarist of all time...I have to agree...I saw Brain at Wembley Stadium in 92 when he guested with Gun's N' Roses on the Use Your Illusion tour not long after the Freddie Mercury tribute concert...to be honest he came on stage and blew Slash out of the water...!!!! I totally agree that Brian is under rated and a superb guitarist...!!!

In the same poll Steve Vai was voted the most over rated guitarist...all I can say is that a few thousand very sad and jealous people must have voted...!!!

I gotta say my number one would be Vai...nothing ever made me want to play guitar more than For The Love Of God...!!!

Rhoads. "I don't know", "Crazy Train" and "Mr. Crowley". IMO, Ozzy's best work and I think Randy deserves a lot of the credit.

Knopfler. Just listen to the last minute of "Sultans of Swing".

Well, a lot of this comes back to everyones own taste and also a bad habit often seen these days that a good guitarist is a fast guitarist. Thats so not true. Too much technique, not enought soul. Offcourse, those who can mix both speed and soul (SRV to name one) are quit impressive and pleasant to hear play :P.

But if you think back and you think in terms of the guy that inspired all the greats of the past 40-50 years ( atleast in blues and classic rock) and whom Keith Richards himself said he was just trying to get to his ankle...

Robert Johnson.

Now thats my vote.

OMG! where the heck is the mention of Mark Knopfler? I'm sure someone has already mentioned him and its just buried in all the replies. Nevermind....I just saw that he was mentioned.

his 2010 concert was unreal.
