Look for how the decals read on the headstock, what the string tree looks like (etc,etc) to see if it's different from Mexican ones etc.
Make sure you buy it from someone you know you can trust or a good store,even online. Avoid buying an old one off ebay/auction sites as it used to be quite easy to fake bolt one neck Fenders, because you can change everything so easily - you can buy "Fender" decals on ebay as well.
Best of all take an old Fender player with you!
Personally i quite like Mexican ones, but then all individual instuments vary.
