I am assuming that if its a starter that you have never played before? Most Newb's quit within 6 mos of trying to learn. I agree with rickB, get it set up by a good tech and show the wife its not a passing fad, then get a "better" one.
I started with a 75.00 no name strat look alike and now have a gibson SG, which the wife was all for when she realized I was serious about learning.
But know what, after getting the Gibby I modded that 75.00 guitar and it is a great player now, it is fun to switch back and forth due to the different actions and tones.


Ps. I also agree with Raz, returning a gift from the wife may be more damaging that asking for a better guitar in 6 mos.
