Yep, strings will make a difference to your Squier. Try D'addario/Ernie Ball. I'd go for 10's as you should be able to cope with the extra tension, you may need to add a spring to the back of the tremelo though. It's not brain surgery tho and I seriously doubt you'll damage much.
