It seems to me that when someone struggles with certain licks or chord progressions that they are probably trying to learn it too fast. It's like you want to drive the Ferrari but haven't worked up to that yet so you're still in the Toyota Celica. You need to have seat time in the Celica before you can do the Ferrari...

In other words, break down what progressions you want to learn in to very small (maybe three chords) pieces. For instance, if you're learning a song, get the first three down then go to the next set and get those down. Once you have the next set down, string the two sets of chords to mastered and string them together. I think you know where to go from there.

When I played in a cover band and we learned a new song, I did it this way. The progressions don't just immediately come to you and are easy to play. Even for skilled players, learning new material takes the ability to build stuff similar to this manner. While some one who's advanced might not struggle as much with the transitions of chords, you are still learning a new set of things. That's why you hear advanced players who continue to practice.

So, take your time and get the stuff down in little chunks. It also gives you the chance to coordinate what your right hand versus your left hand are doing.
