Hi Gary, sorry for the delayed response.
I think the tension 'Gripmaster' (in big monster truck voice) is a good idea, I would suggest that. Practice will help too.
As far as getting your fingers to work well, I can suggest trying to use the tip of your finger as much as possible, coming straight down on the string as much as possible. Also some guitars have more space between the strings which would be the easiest solution and make it more satisfying to play. Make sure your nails are clipped too so they don't get in the way.
