I started playing 25+ years ago but took time off until recently. Even though I'm a pretty skilled player and had a pretty good grasp of a number of styles, when I came to GT and signed up for the lessons program, I went back to Fundamentals 1 and 2 (ok, I liberally skipped things on 1 but I wouldn't recommend it), particularly in Fund#2, you get a sense of major and minor scales. Without this knowledge, any lead playing is all but useless. For me, I took it as a refresher but still found it to be useful even though I pretty much knew the stuff. Learning the C Maj, A mn scales gives you a good grasp of where to go in leads. It also gives you a really good layout of how the fretboard works and is a good basis for understanding future things likes modes and many vocabularies of style licks.
If I can go back and do it, you can.... ;)
