Welcome to the site. Glad you are getting value from the site. I have two suggestions to approach your problem.

1. Play songs that don't have leads. Who needs a lead solo when you are just learning anyway?

(i.e. "Dance The Night Away" Van Halen, "She Loves You" Beatles, "Brown Eyed Girl" Van Morrison, "Jumping Jack Flash" Stones, etc.)

2. Pick a song with a solo, but if it is beyond your skill level, just don't play the solo part. Or simplify it, or play the rhythm part underneath it.

I take this approach with my kid all the time now. I can play it, but he can't yet. So why make it a big deal? We set aside time to work on learning new things. But we also make time to just play whatever he can manage at the time. Playing parts of old Van Halen tunes in the home studio with my six year old kid. It's the best. :)

Happy playing and learning. Have fun!
