I am a beginner as well and had trouble with barre chords. I persisted and built calluses, etc...After a while, I looked towards my guitar instead of at myself. I started experimenting with different guitar brands as well as types at my local guitar stores. In a nut shell, I found that, for me, different guitar brands and shapes made a difference for me. With some guitars, I could easily nail the barre chords...others, not so good.
In summary, it is true when they say that you need to find your guitar that suits you, your fingers, and size. Different guitars have different size frets, necks, bodies etc...It may not be you, per se, but the guitar that is slowing you down, especially if it is a guitar under $150.
Having said that, a good musician can make a knock off guitar sound great! Keep practicing.
