I started off with a cheaper acoustic, think I paid around $125 new. Due to a mishap involving alcohol and ambien, it got broken. I found a very nice Ovation on Craigslist at a very good price - $200. I think it was selling new at the time in the $800's. It's a much easier guitar to play, and sounds better. The built in tuner is a great feature. When you're first starting, you really want to tune it each time you play. It helps your ears learn.
I also have a Fender Squire. It's not a bad guitar, but I'm wanting something nicer there as well. I have a Fender 12-string that just sounds beautiful.
I guess what I'm saying is, if you are seriously going to get into it, and not just dabble to see if you like it (You WILL suck at first, but you'll get better), then spend a bit more and get something you can grow into. If you have a local guitar store, they can be very helpful in choosing something that would be good for you. If you have a craigslist for your area, it's a great place to check out. If you find one, see if they will meet you at the local shop and have them look it over. There's a lot that could be wrong that you might not be able to see.
