What you describe sounds like playing octaves on two strings and then playing scales with those octaves up and down two strings. Like this as an E major scale:
E |------------------------------|
B |------------------------------|
G |-9-11-13-11-9-8-6-4-6-8-9-----|
D |-x-xx-xx-xx-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-----|
A |-7-9--11-9--7-6-4-2-4-6-7-----|
E |------------------------------|
Or this as an E minor scale:
E |------------------------------|
B |------------------------------|
G |-9-11-12-11-9-7-5-4-5-7-9-----|
D |-x-xx-xx-xx-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-----|
A |-7-9--10-9--7-5-3-2-3-5-7-----|
E |------------------------------|
Is that an accurate description of what you saw?
